Over many years the State of Matter team has built hundreds of Intranets leveraging SharePoint. Although every business is different many commonalities exist across them when it comes to their needs of an intranet.

Rather than “re-invent the wheel” each time, we have built a SharePoint QuickStart which packages up a significant amount of our knowledge and intellectual property into a pre-packaged, annualised service.

It is designed to enable organisations to do the following:

  • Make it easy for your employees to navigate and find what they need quickly, with minimal to no training.

 

a FUTURE-Proofed Sharepoint

Microsoft made big news in the SharePoint community in May 2016 when they first told their developers about the new SharePoint Framework. In less than twelve months this has progressed from Release Candidate 0 to General Availability.

For non-technical people, the news is that Microsoft is recommending SharePoint developers start writing applications in new ways, and over time it will mean that any previous components will need to be re-written to align to this new Framework and modern user interface.

Leveraging our QuickStart guarantees that the components we provide you will continue to work into the future, and it is on us to keep them updated, re-writing them as necessary.

This list below is ever-evolving, however here is a sample of the components we include in every SharePoint QuickStart. As part of the service we'll keep them up-to date and aligned to Microsoft's developer framework, as well as continue to release new components as we develop them.

Component Commentary
Custom Navigation Menu Provides an improvement on the out of the box navigation menu functionality, by allowing you to have sub-menu items displayed. It is controlled by a SharePoint list, enabling a simple method to totally control the navigation experience of your site for your end users.
Forms Centre Provides a single location allowing your staff to find a form from anywhere across your organisation, without needing to "hunt" for them across numerous departmental sites. Supports any type of form that can be accessed via a URL including .doc files, external sites such as SurveyMonkey and TypeForm, SharePoint forms and .pdf files.
Tile Menu Provides an easy and visually compelling way for you to create quick links to other web based applications or public web sites. Includes access to over 30,000 searchable icons to ensure you can find the perfect graphic to complement each of your links.
News Rotator Allows your organisation the opportunity to publish news articles including a hero image. This is a handy component to leverage for your intranet homepage. News can be tagged and targeted in specific sites, so for example, marketing news is only shown on the marketing site.
Workspaces Frequently employees will work on initiatives and projects that have a finite lifespan. This app enables you to quickly create areas for projects where it establishes a shared OneNote, document library, permissions and timeline for your people to work and share information in a low-friction way. You can archive workspaces once their projects are completed, while still being able to surface content via search to encourage document re-use over a long period of time.

Staff milestones A widget that shows when your people are having a work anniversary.
Files Around me Leverages Office Graph (Delve) to show the user files across OneDrive and SharePoint that are likely to be relevant to them. This is particularly helpful when placed on your intranet homepage, as it enables you to keep the content fresh without requiring a dedicated internal communications function. It also gently encourages your staff to use OneDrive and SharePoint document folders as their primary file store.
My Recent Files Leverages Office Graph to show the user files they have recently worked on across OneDrive and SharePoint. This is particularly helpful when placed on your intranet homepage, as it enables you to keep the content fresh without requiring a dedicated internal communications function. It also gently encourages your staff to use OneDrive and SharePoint document folders as their primary file store.
My Recent Sites Shows the user sites across SharePoint they have recently viewed. Well suited to organisations with large SharePoint deployments with many sites.
My Followed Sites provides the user a list of sites they have chosen to follow within SharePoint. Well suited to organisations with large SharePoint deployments with many sites.
LinkedIn Link Allows you to link directly to your corporate LinkedIn page. Helpful to subtly remind your people of your organisation’s social presence on LinkedIn, to encourage them to collaborate and promote your organisation.
Tips and Tricks RSS feed of tips the SofM team have created for end users to help them get the most out of Office365.
Suggestion Box Form & list that enables you to capture employee suggestions
Marketing Collateral Request Form & list that enables your staff to request marketing collateral/samples etc.
SharePoint User Guide User guide that we have created, for your employees to access if they need help with SharePoint.
Company Values A box that randomly displays a company value or other strategic messages, using a SharePoint list as the data source.
IT Asset Register Simple register that allows your IT team to track assets and which individuals they have been assigned to.
Social Club Enables your HR team to list social activities and track RSVPs for them.
Training Register Enables you to list upcoming training sessions and track RSVPs.
Risk Register A formal mechanism to allow your organisation to track risks against probability vs severity. Handy to assist with ISO compliance.
New Starters Feed Profiles employees who have recently joined your business.
RSS Feeds An alternative method to display RSS feeds in your intranet that offers more stylistic flexibility than the out of the box SharePoint method.
Admin Console We have created a “back page” for administrators to easily perform common tasks that are related to the components outlined here (for example, adding news articles or updating company values).
