Aussie, Aussie Aussie, tune tune tune! In 2004 Evolutionary Vibes Volume 5 was album of the week on several Australian radio stations, included the beloved Triple J. It?s been almost one year since Volume 5 showcased what some would call the epitome of (relatively) undiscovered Australian talent. Volume 6 is bound for the same glory. The continually evolving and growing Evolutionary Vibes series now delivers ?The Tenacious Years?; an unmixed eclectic blend of Australian music spanning a multiplicity of genres.
One thing that becomes pertinent from experiencing the compilation is the state of Aussie hip-hop is seriously healthy. The compilations first taste of hip-hop is through N8?s (I think I?ve heard of this guy before somewhere?) ?Naked With Socks On?. This is one my favorite tunes on the disc. Quirky and highly humorous rhymes, accompanied by a soft guitar and mellow percussion are the key to this tunes appeal. Let?s hope N8 stays naked for a while. My other equal favorite is 2up?s (I think I?ve heard of this guy before somewhere?) ?It?s Alright?. Punchy Aussie hip-hop that really moves and shakes. The rhymes spit about performing, drinking, kissing cousins, girls and (of course) Michael Jackson. The vocal work and studio efforts are first class. Upshots? track showcases the future of Aussie hip-hop; quality. The vocals are cut, affected superbly and edited masterfully; the beats and melody are largely hypnotic whilst still retaining strength.
Keeping the beats broken, the CD will really appeal to breaks lovers. Regal and Fretless? tune ?Rock The Funky Beat? is an eclectic blend of funky yet soulful percussion, chopped-up vocals and an ass-shaking bassline reminiscent of an electric-shock to the rear. But really, what more do you expect when Mark Walton, Glenn Humphries, Wiseguys and the Bronx Dogs team up? Keeping the breaks flavor are the Elation. The M. Connolly remix features a straight up breaks structure, the vocal work here is stunning and quite original. I?m not vocal expert, but it?s sung high and low and with rich emotion. Pauly J brings some laid back beats to plate, the drums synchronize perfectly with a melodic Spanish flamingo guitar and cruisey percussion. Dj Soup slurps up a unique and
highly contagious track. It features a solid break beat structure and a spoken vocal reminisce of a redneck at karaoke. The rolling bassline locks perfectly with the drums and highly distorted, screechy guitar riff making this an original and catchy track. The Bamboo?s deliver funky breaks to the plate, but not you standard funky breaks. They serve an intoxicating cocktail of rumbling funky basslines, 70?s distorted guitar riffs and subtle electro-infused melodies.
For those of you whose four beats just have to be on the floor, there are a few tunes to check out. [Love] Tattoo?s ?Put Ya Body In It? is an early in the evening style tune. A semi-broken beat, a sexy yet naughty vocal and a fresh uplifting vibe pleasures the house-lovers eardrums. Continuing this pleasure is Spanish-influenced stint by Los Cabrones. The beauty of this track lies in its lush breakdown. I close my eyes and I swear in relaxing on the beach in Ibiza! The track isn?t like the rehashed ?latin house? circulating these days.
For everyone else, there?s more that must float your boat. ?All Of This? by Inga Liljestrom is about as stripped back as it comes. Listening to the track, the picture that appears in my mind is a large, cold, deserted theatre, and single guitarist in the darkened corner, the dust infected spot light blinds a woman half hunched over a microphone resting on a stool. She sings about an ironic heartache; the deeply haunting vocal and subtle mellow feel to the track make it a favorite of mine.
Keeping on the vocal tip is Ubin?s latest number. Rich and sultry vocals accompany a highly effective short punchy drum-line and smooth, melodic uplifting strings; this track will sit well with those who like it left-field and vocal. From one extreme to the other; Superfuild?s monster is a Chemical Brothers collides with Prodigy and re-edited live by the Crystal Method style tune, but honestly its better. The edit on the CD is only short, but the flawless fusion of tough broken drum beats, a raw Aussie male vocal, a thick distorted ?electronic? sounding riff and a highly danceable bassline makes this my pick of the CD. What a tune!
The Latest release in the Evolutionary Vibes series does it again; do you like quality Australian music? Yes 100% Australian!
